Mission

The Fuelcell Propulsion Institute facilitates commercialization of fuelcell vehicles by:

  • Assembling the major players of industries seeking commercialization of fuelcell vehicles as industrial machines.
  • Planning and recommending pre-competitive vehicle research, development, and demonstration projects.
  • Educating stakeholders and its members about fuelcell technology and how it can meet the needs of industry.

Organized as a nonprofit membership organization, the consortium has undergone exponential growth since its founding in 1996. The role of the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute is to plan a product with high commercialization potential. Actual commercialization is the responsibility of commercial partners of the development and demonstration projects operated through joint ventures with the independent company Vehicle Projects LLC.

Industry Committees

Industry Committees provide input to the development and demonstration of fuelcell vehicles that solve health and safety problems or are more productive than existing technologies in their respective industries. Committee membership includes three types of institutions required for successful commercialization: technology developers, manufacturers, and end-users. An industry committee proposes a project that will satisfy the needs of the particular industry that it represents.

Projects

The funding, organization, and execution of projects proposed by an industry committee are delegated to the joint-venture partner, Vehicle Projects LLC. The Institute then joins the project as a project partner to assure that the needs of industry are met. Click Projects to learn about the Institute’s major projects.

Education

Member and Stakeholder Education. The Fuelcell Propulsion Institute educates its members and industry stakeholders about how fuelcell technology can meet the needs of industry. Education is accomplished by member networking, production of scholarly reports, presentations at technical conferences, displaying vehicles at expositions, and listing websites with additional information on fuelcell technology.

Public Awareness. A role of the Institute as a partner in funded vehicle development and demonstration projects is to direct public awareness activities. Click Education to learn more about fuelcell technology and how its use in commercial vehicles can benefit us all.

Key Personnel

The Executive Committee of the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute is comprised of the five elected officers: President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Secretary is the custodian of non-fiscal records of the Institute, and the Treasurer, the custodian of the fiscal records and authorized agent for financial expenditures.

The staff and facilities of the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute are provided by its managing contractor, Vehicle Projects LLC. The management staff is comprised of a General Manager, Senior Administrator, and Administrator.
